Oakland Stuns Kentucky
The biggest news story when putting together a March Madness First Round review has to be the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The Golden Grizzlies were able to defeat the Kentucky Wildcats. Kentucky had solid odds to win March Madness, but they didn’t even get throught the first round.
Kentucky was unable to defend Jack Gohlke on Thursday night, as the sharpshooter was able to pour in 10 three-pointers to help lead his team to a huge upset over Kentucky. The college basketball lines favored Kentucky in a major way, but Oakland led the game nearly the entire time.
The start of the NCAA Tournament brings a whirlwind of drama to the college basketball schedule. Oakland will definitely be at the center of the conversation in the coming days. Gohlke is not one of the best college basketball players in the country, but he was able to catch fire and deliver his team a huge win.
The Grizzlies will now face NC State in the next round as the Wolfpack were able to upset Texas Tech. NC State had to win the ACC Tournament to even make the NCAA Tournament, and they showed that they were not ready for their dream season to end.
Other Top Teams Roll
There are usually more upsets when looking at a March Madness First Round review, but the other top seeds were playing well on Thursday. Some of the expert picks March Madness were not on the floor on Thursday, but there were still some great teams that showed off their talent.
North Carolina was the lone number 1 seed that took the floor on Thursday, and they had little trouble in getting past Wagner. Iowa State and Arizona were a couple of number two seeds that showed that their stance on the top of the college basketball standings wasn’t a fluke.
The Illinois Fighting Illini won the Big Ten Tournament championship, and they came into March Madness with a ton of momentum. Marcus Domask delivered the 10th triple-double in NCAA Tournament history as Illinois cruised to a blowout win on Thursday afternoon.
Some of these top teams are now going to face a much tougher task in the second round, and that should lead to some great battles throughout the tournament.
Kansas Survives
The college basketball injury report has not been kind to Kansas this season, and there were some concerns that the Jayhawks would fall to Samford in the First Round. Many were predicting college basketball scores that had Kansas going down, but head coach Bill Self just wouldn’t let that happen.
Samford was able to give the Jayhawks a good run at the end, but ultimately the Jayhawks survived. Kansas will now take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs on Saturday in what should be a terrific matchup.
