Hawkeyes vs Iowa State Cyclones Betting Preview
These two teams are meeting for the first time in the series as ranked opponents. Iowa State comes in as the No. 9 ranked team in the country, and Iowa sits at No. 10 in the latest polls. This is the only game of the week where two top ten teams square off. The Cyclones come into this game as 4 point home favorites.
Iowa Hawkeyes Preview: Passing game still in question
The Hawkeyes started their season with a bang coming away with a win over a dangerous team in the Indiana Hoosiers. This game was pretty much over from the opening kick as the Hoosiers never could find any rhythm.
Defense wins ball games, and that held true in the opener. The Hoosiers couldn’t get anything going in the running game and forced three turnovers through the air. The Hawkeyes only allowed 2 field goals during the game. Tyler Goodson had 19 carries for 99 yards and one score that came right away in this game. While Iowa had two turnovers, it didn’t make much of a difference as this was as dominant a performance as there could be.
Despite this game being over from the kickoff, Iowa still has some question marks as the season rolls on. Spencer Petras was not very good in this game as he was 13/27 for 145 yards and no touchdowns. The Hawkeyes are going to need more from their QB if they are hoping to pull off another big win.
Iowa State Cyclones Preview:
Cyclones fans shouldn’t worry too much about the sluggish start to the opener, where they came away with a 16-10 win. Last season they stumbled out of the gate against Louisiana before taking control of the game.
Brock Purdy was 21/26 with 199 yards and no touchdowns, and no interceptions. It was a strong effort from Northern Iowa as the Cyclones could never really break the game open. After allowing an opening drive touchdown, the Cyclones defense settled in and did just enough to earn a win.
One of the premier backs in the country in Breece Hall had 23 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown. Against Iowa, the Cyclones are going to need Hall to be productive if they want to secure a win at home in this rivalry.
This will be the 68th time these two teams have met in the series and first time as ranked opponents and top 10 opponents. The Hawkeyes hold a huge edge in the series with a 45-22 record overall. Despite winning 5 straight games in this series, they have not played a Cyclones team that is this talented.
Another notable is that the Hawkeyes are 20-8 at Ames field. This should be one of the best contests on the day and a very strong defensive showing from both sides. Expect a low-scoring affair, but the Hawkeyes come away with a win.
