Looking ahead to find out which player has the best chance to be the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year is different than it has been in year’s past. The only quarterback selected in the first round, Kenny Pickett, is headed for a Pittsburgh Steelers team that may be destined for a bad season. Pickett also may be splitting time with veteran Mitch Trubisky for most of part of the season.
Anyone who knows how to bet on football knows that the players who win this award are always skill-position players. Since 2010, there have been six quarterbacks, four running backs and two wide receivers chosen as the league’s top offensive rookie. While Pickett is the favorite at +500, there are a lot of other rookies with the potential to put up big numbers that will help their teams.
NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Odds
Beyond Pickett, there are a number of players bunched behind him. New York Jets running back Breece Hall and Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Drake London are +700. Tennessee Titans wide receiver Treylon Burks and Green Bay Packers receiver are right beyond those two are +800. Here are some profiles on some of the top candidates, as long as some longshots. NFL betting odds show there are a lot of interesting candidates.
Breece Hall
Hall made a major impact during his time at Iowa State, helping the Cyclones turn into a contender for the Big 12 title. In his sophomore and junior seasons, Hall would score 41 combined touchdowns and rush for 3,044 yards. NFL betting tips will show that Hall is walking into a difficult situation.
The Jets are still trying to figure out if Zach Wilson is the man to lead their offense. The former BYU quarterback struggled last season. If Hall can have a big year and the Jets’ offense turns around, Hall may be worth a look. However, with Wilson’s struggles, Hall could also be at the center of a lot of defensive gameplans.
Drake London
Former Southern Cal standout Drake London was so highly regarded, the Atlanta Falcons took him in the first round. The 6-foot-4 receiver exploded during his junior seasons, doubling his career output in receiving yards by hauling in 88 passes for 1,084 yards and seven touchdowns. London is coming in and being asked to be the man in Atlanta.
What could hurt London’s candidacy is the possibility of splitting votes for quarterback Desmond Ridder, who the Falcons selected in the second round. If both team up to help Atlanta have a strong season, there is a strong possibility they could split votes. Early reports are Ridder could challenge to start from Day 1 in Atlanta.
Skyy Moore
The Western Michigan University product isn’t going to be asked to be the man in Kansas City. However, with Tyreek Hill having moved on to Miami, there are going to be opportunities for other players to catch passes from Patrick Mahomes and the juggernaut Kansas City offense. Moore, who is 5-10, catch 95 passes for 1,292 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.
There will be a definite learning curve for Moore, who will be going from the Mid-America Conference to the NFL. However, with the Chiefs adding veteran Juju Smith-Schuster, teams may not be focusing on Moore right away. He’s worth a look at +1000.
Matt Corral
Corral, an Ole Miss product, earned some points for risking injury to play in the Sugar Bowl last season. When Corral got hurt in the Sugar Bowl, people were less sure about his decision. However, there is something to like about the 6-2 quarterback who tumbled into the third round.
Corral, who is +2000 to win the award, may get an opportunity to play in Carolina, which tried to play Sam Darnold and Cam Newton last season. When both veterans struggled to produce, the Panthers decided to go in another direction. With some solid weapons around him, Corral could have an opportunity to have a good season. However, there will be a lot of pressure on this coaching staff to win right away.
NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Predictions
Whoever wins rookie of the year may all boil down to which player ends up being a part of the team with the most success. Despite having uncertainty with the quarterback situation, London is an intriguing prospect for the award. With the league being more and more reliant on team’s possessing a strong passing offense, London will get a lot of opportunities to gain yards.
Also, if the Falcons find themselves behind more in games, Atlanta will need to pass in order to try and catch up. London will be able to find a way to rack up yards and could find a way to reward anyone backing him with a nice seven-to-one payout.
