Looking at the NFL Draft wills how the top of the whole proceeding went how many people thought it would. While there were some late reports that chaos lurked with the top five picks, Alabama Crimson Tide product Bryce Young and Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback C.J. Stroud were the first two players chosen by the Carolina Panthers and Houston Texans, respectively. All the 2023 draft recap will show is that much of the late information that came out was unfounded.
Here’s a look at how some of the draft went and showed how some of the NFL Draft odds were wrongly priced. With the draft out of the way, the NFL schedule only has a few more hurdles before the start of the regular season. Fans can finally look forward to seeing the team head to training camp.
Not No. 1
One of the more ridiculous rumors that appeared right before the draft was that Kentucky product Will Levis would be taken No. 1 overall. A post by an anonymous Reddit user changed the NFL picks for many as a post saying Levis knew he was being taken No. 1 overall changed the betting line significantly. However, despite being one of the 17 players invited to Kansas City for the Draft, he wasn’t chosen in the first round.
Levis fell to No. 33 and to the Tennessee Titans. While there may have been some embarrassment on draft day, it may not be the worst thing to happen to Levis. NFL team stats show the Titans will need a quarterback to compete with Ryan Tannehill and Malik Willis, who Tennessee drafted last season, which hasn’t worked out so far.
Omar’s coming
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ first-year General Manager, Omar Khan, didn’t wait to endear himself to the fanbase. Looking at NFL player stats from last season would show the team had a lot of holes to fill to become a playoff team again. Pittsburgh would end up trading with the New England Patriots in the first round to move up three spots to select Georgia offensive lineman Broderick Jones.
The 2023 draft recap also shows the Steelers were able to get Penn State graduate Joey Porter Jr. Porter’s dad also played for Pittsburgh.
Lions make strange decisions
The Detroit Lions are building off a strong season where it appeared they had some momentum going forward if they could fix their defense. That’s why many people looking at the 2023 draft recap were surprised when Detroit took a running back with its first pick for the draft. The Lions surprised people who look at NFL MVP odds by taking Alabama running back Jaymyr Gibbs with the 12th pick.
There was also some thought that the Lions reached when they picked Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell with the 18th overall pick. Campbell wasn’t rated that highly on NFL Draft boards for many teams. While drafting a running back makes more sense with Detroit trading running back D’Andre Swift to the Philadelphia Eagles, this has been a puzzling offseason for the Lions.
For a team hoping to climb up the NFL standings, Detroit has made some strange decisions.
Colts hoping they find some luck
When it comes to developing a quarterback at the professional level, Indianapolis used the No. 4 pick in the draft to choose a player who has a game that doesn’t necessarily translate to having successful NFL player stats. Richardson only completed 53.8 percent of his passes in college.
When it comes to athleticism, Richardson has the size and tools to be successful. Richardson will need to find a way to be mobile and stay off the NFL injury report. The Indianapolis Colts have yet to find success under center since Andrew Luck retired. Indianapolis hopes Richardson can give the Colts an edge in most NFL matchups.
