Aaron Rodgers will have to wait for another potential playoff matchup to exercise the 49ers’ ghosts from the Packers’ nightmares.
According to Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur, Rodgers will not play in Green Bay’s first two preseason games.
The earliest Rodgers might hit the field will be in the Packers’ final preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
This leaves quarterbacking duties to Jordan Love, the No. 26 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Love and Danny Etling will see the majority of work at quarterback for the Packers.
49ers Analysis
The San Francisco 49ers paid a significant price to get the No. 3 pick in the draft, giving up four draft picks – including three first-round picks – to draft Trey Lance in the 2021 draft. Lance is expected to get a few snaps in before handing the ball over to likely backup Nate Sudfeld.
We state likely because Jimmy Garoppolo is destined to leave the Bay Area after five seasons. Garoppolo is recovering from surgery and working out at team facilities while not attending team meetings or participating in practice.
The 49ers have until August 30th to trade or release Garoppolo before his salary counts against the salary cap.
NFL Injury Report
This is the preseason, so many starters either won’t play or will play limited snaps. However, the Packers have four starters on offense listed as out: wide receiver Christian Watson, tight end Robert Tonyan, left tackle David Bakhtiari, and right tackle Eglton Jenkins.
On defense, the Packers only have to start free safety Darnell Savage is listed as questionable. As for the San Francisco 49ers, only one starter has been listed as questionable: right defensive tackle Erik Armstead.
Starting left defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw may play more snaps than the average starter, with backup Hassan Ridgeway listed as questionable while third-stringer Kalia Davis is listed as out.
