There is Premier League action on Tuesday, with Southampton hosting Brentford in the only game on the calendar. Brentford is hoping to build on an FA Cup win over the weekend and put a recent three-game losing streak in the rearview mirror. Meanwhile, Southampton is unbeaten in three straight Premier League matches, as the Saints are slowly working their way up the table.
Brentford at Southampton Betting Analysis
On the Brentford Side
Brentford currently sits 12th in the Premier League table, which is a good place for a newly-promoted club to be midway through the season. As mentioned, the Bees are hoping to build on a 4-1 over Port Vale in the FA Cup over the weekend. That win came after the Bees took down Aston Villa 2-1, ending a three-game Premier League losing streak.
Surprisingly, Brentford has been better than most teams defensively this season. The Bees have conceded 26 goals in 19 matches, which is impressive for a club making the jump to the Premier League this season. Over their last five Premier League matches, Brentford has allowed seven goals, which isn’t spectacular, but it’s enough to keep them competitive in games and give them a chance.
On the attack, it’s been a team effort for the Bees, who have 23 goals in 19 matches but haven’t received more than four goals from any individual player. Those four goals have come from Ivan Toney, who hasn’t been the talisman that Brentford was hoping he’d be, especially since he’s scoreless in his last four matches. The Bees don’t have many other places they can turn to for goals, with Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, the only other players with more than two Premier League goals this season.
On the Southampton Side
The Saints were just happy to be back on the field last weekend after a long hiatus. Southampton needed 30 extra minutes to beat Swansea City 3-2 in an FA Cup match. Before then, the Saints hadn’t played a Premier League match since December 28; a 1-1 draw with Tottenham in what was their fourth draw in six matches in December.
For what it’s worth, the Saints had a strong defensive performance in that match, giving up just one goal despite playing most of the match down a man. However, the Saints haven’t kept a clean sheet since early November, giving up 17 goals in eight Premier League matches since then. In total, the Saints have conceded 29 goals in their 19 Premier League matches this season.
At the same time, Southampton ranks 15th in the Premier League on the attack, managing just 20 goals in those 19 matches. The Saints have only had seven different players find the back of the net this season and have the third-fewest assists in the league. While leading scorer James Ward-Prowse is dangerous on set pieces, he and the Saints can sometimes struggle to score from open play.
Brentford at Southampton Prediction
Top sportsbooks odds have Southampton has clear home favorites in this match with the over/under around +100 while Brentford has a moneyline around +280 with a draw set at +240. Southampton’s defensive struggles create some pause as favorites, although the Bees aren’t necessarily the ideal candidate to take advantage of those shortcomings. Ultimately, the best value in this match is picking a draw.
