The Premier League returns from the recent international break on Saturday with a relegation six-pointer between Watford and Burnley.
Currently, Burnley is last in the Premier League with just 12 points, while Watford is one spot ahead of them with 14 points. Both teams need to get to 16 points to be clear of the relegation zone, so this is a match in which both teams will be desperate to grab all three points.
Burnley vs Watford Stats
Looking at the Watford Stats
It’s truly a new era for Watford, as the Hornets are feeling the pressure of being in a relegation fight. Claudio Ranieri was fired after Watford’s last game, as his tenure was brief, with the Hornets losing 10 of 14 matches while he was in charge. He’s been replaced with former England manager and recent Crystal Palace boss Roy Hodgson.
Hodgson’s first task will be to get Watford looking more organized defensively. The Hornets rank near the bottom in the Premier League in goals allowed while also conceding 20 goals in their last eight Premier League matches. That includes a crushing 3-0 defeat to fellow relegation foe Norwich City right before the international break.
On the bright side, the Hornets have a reasonable amount of quality in the attacking end of the field. After all, Watford beat Manchester United 4-1 in November and also put five goals past Everton in October. However, the Hornets scored just one goal during their three Premier League matches in January and will be without Senegalese star Ismaïla Sarr against Burnley.
Looking at the Burnley Stats
This has arguably been Sean Dyche’s toughest season in the Premier League as Burnley’s manager. The Clarets have had more postponed matches than any other team, playing just 18 matches to this point in the season. That gives them some games in hand compared to the other teams in the relegation fight, although the pressure is mounting on Dyche to start getting results.
While the Clarets have played fewer games than every other club, there isn’t enough of an excuse for having the second-fewest goals in the Premier League. They have just 16 goals in 18 matches, and it doesn’t help that Chris Wood was poached by Newcastle last month. That leaves Maxwel Cornet as Burnley’s only player with more than two goals this season.
Of course, Dyche and Burnley have always earned their keep defensively. The Clarets managed a scoreless draw with Arsenal right before the international break and have kept three clean sheets in their last six Premier League matches. However, they still have a nine-match unbeaten stretch in all competitions.
