The 2022 Ostrava Open, or the AEGL Open for sponsorship reasons, is a WTA indoor hard court tournament that takes place from October 3 to 9 at the Ostrava Arena in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
This is the third edition of the tournament. Anett Kontaveit is the defending champion and one of the Ostrava Open betting favorites to win again this year but will face tough competition from a loaded field that also includes world No. 1 and 2022 US Open champion Iga Swiatek as well as Paula Badosa, Maria Sakkari, Belinda Bencic, and Beatriz Haddad Maia.
Outright Betting Odds
- Iga Swiatek +187
- Anett Kontaveit +1200
- Elena Rybakina +1400
- Maria Sakkari +1600
- Paula Badosa +1600
- Karolina Pliskova +1600
- Petra Kvitova +1600
- Belinda Bencic +1600
- Jelena Ostapenko +1600
- Daria Kasatkina +1600
Swiatek is the overwhelming tennis betting favorite in any event she plays, and this is no different. Kontaveit, the defending champion, has the second-shortest odds at +1200, way back of Swiatek at +187.
Swiatek won the French Open and US Open this year, in addition to five other tournaments. She’s 57-7 and has won more than $9 million in prize money.
Who Can Realistically Topple Swiatek?
With just a few weeks remaining before the WTA finals, points are at a premium, and players will be scratching and clawing for a chance to finish in the top eight. This makes players in that 8-16 range popular tennis picks for Ostrava Open betting as they certainly have more on the line than some others.
Maria Sakkari, Paula Badosa, Madison Keys, Belinda Bencic, and Beatriz Hadad Maia all fall within that range and should be viable contenders in Czech Republic. But can any of these players stop Swiatek?
Sakkari (+1600) is a solid tennis betting option outside of Swiatek. She has a 3-2 career record against the world No. 1 and won each of her three matches in straight sets. She did, however, lose both of her matches this year against Swiatek.
Sakkari reached the final at the Emilia-Romagna Open last week and is now No. 7 in the world. She’ll be inspired to have an impressive showing in Czech Republic.
Bencic (+1600), the world No. 14, should be even more motivated to gain some rankings points and reach the WTA Finals. She has some work to do, but has a decent draw for Ostava Open betting and is 1-1 against Swiatek, so she could certainly be the one to take down the Polish star if necessary. Bencic defeated Swiatek in the Round of 16 at the 2021 US Open.
Ostapenko (+1600) is another wildcard Ostrava Open betting option as the world No. 16 is 29-17 this season and could move up considerably in the rankings with a strong showing in the next few weeks.
She reached the final of the Korea Open two weeks ago but had a setback with a first-round loss in the Tallinn Open last week. She takes on Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first round at Ostrava.
Eugenie Bouchard, a Welcome Sight in the Main Draw
Don’t expect Canadian Eugenie Bouchard to win the Ostrava Open, but it’s great nonetheless to see the 28-year-old back on the court competing against top-tier competition.
Bouchard, once the most popular player in women’s tennis, has fallen off considerably since her breakthrough year in 2014 when she reached the Wimbledon final and semifinals at the Australian Open and French Open.
Bouchard played her first singles match in more than 17 months in August and has slowly been showing signs of her old self. She qualified for the main draw in Czech Republic, defeating world No. 92 Dalma Galfi 6-3, 6-2, to earn her spot in the tournament.
Unfortunately, she matched up against Bencic in the first round. Bencic is 2-0 against Bouchard.
Sometimes it’s best to bet on the favorite, and this is one of those times. Since the start of the US Open, Swiatek has been dominant, playing at a level unmatched by any other players on the WTA Tour this season. Other than a disappointing mid-summer slump, she’s been near unbeatable.
