Early 2023 Internazionali BNL d’Italia Schedule Upsets
Many of the top-ranked players are Internazionali d’Italia contenders, including Djokovic, Jannik Sinner, and Holger Rune, received byes to the second round, so there weren’t many particularly noteworthy tennis matchups on the first day of action. Stan Wawrinka and Cristian Garin moved on to the second round, while Andy Murray was upset in three sets by Fabio Fognini.
2023 Internazionali BNL d’Italia Odds are high as Fognini will move on to play Miomir Kecmanović in the Round of 64. Other notable second-round matches include Wawrinka vs. Gregor Dmitrov, Djokovic vs. Tomas Etcheverry, and Casper Ruud vs. Arthur Rinderknech.
The Draw for Top Internazionali d’Italia Contenders
Djokovic, who is 17-3 this season and the world No. 1 (but will likely be taken over in that spot by Alcaraz this week), has never played Etcheverry in his career. Djokovic has the second-shortest odds to win the French Open, so it would be a major upset if he was to lose in the second round but the fact he’s unfamiliar with Etcheverry could come into play. He’s in the same quarter of the bracket as Alex de Minaur and Felix Auger-Aliassime.
Alcaraz, who has the shortest 2023 Internazionali BNL d’Italia odds to win, faces the prospect of playing Stefanos Tsitsipas or Lorenzo Sonego in the quarter-finals. He wouldn’t meet Djokovic until the finals.
Sinner, who has the third-shortest odds to win, could meet Casper Ruud in the quarter-finals and Djokovic in the semifinals. It’s a tough path to victory for the young Italian phenom.
Rune, who has the fourth-shortest odds to win in the Internazionali d’Italia schedule, is, along with Sinner and Alcaraz, part of the next generation of men’s tennis. He won the Bavarian International two weeks ago and reached the final at the Monte-Carlo Masters the week prior. He’s in the same side of the bracket as Djokovic and could meet the world No. 1 in the quarter-finals.
Headline Matches on Friday
Alex de Minaur (-175) vs. Marton Fucsovics (+137)
Arthur Fils (+450) vs. Holger Rune (-700)
Botic Van DeZandschulp (+100) vs. Laslo Djere (-125)
Novak Djokovic (-900) vs. Thomas Etcheverry (+550)
Stan Wawrinka (+100) vs. Grigor Dmitrov (-125)
Internazionali d’Italia Predictions
There’s a lot on the line for both Djokovic and Alcaraz and it’s hard to see someone other than those two players winning in Rome, especially as they gear up for the French Open. Alcaraz has a chance to prove himself as the next great tennis player from Spain, overtaking Rafael “The King of Clay” Nadal at Roland Garros, while Djokovic has a chance in France to become the all-time leader in Grand Slam victories with 23.
Internazionali d’Italia predictions are juicy as Alcaraz has the easier path to the final, which is why he would be the safer outright tennis pick than Djokovic. He has won seven of his 10 titles on clay and has a remarkable tennis stats of 82.6 winning percentage in 69 matches (57-12). Djokovic has an 81.5 percent winning percentage on clay.
Attractive longshot picks include Ruud (+3300) and Cameron Norrie (+5000).
