Perhaps the best historical event in Empoli’s history was a trip to the UEFA Cup in the 2007-08 season. They lost in the first round to Zurich, losing 4-2 on aggregate thanks to a 3-0 loss on the road. Before they were able to concern themselves with Serie A matchups, Empoli was first founded in 1920. They earned their first promotion to Serie A in 1986, and have only spent a few seasons at a time in the top-flight.
