Real Betis History
Nothing sums up Real Betis’ tumultuous history quite like its club motto: Viva el Betis manque (aunque) pierda! This translates to “Long live Betis even when they lose!” Real Betis was founded in 1907 and won its first and only La Liga title in 1935, but has since largely bounced back and forth between the top division and Segunda División. It has even spent seven years in the third-tier Tercera División.
However, recent years have been relatively kind to Real Betis. After a last-place finish in La Liga in 2013-14, it won the Segunda División the following season and has remained in La Liga’s top division since the 2015-16 season. It finished top 10 in four of the past five seasons and won the Copa del Rey for the third time in 2021-22.
Real Betis – Historical Events
Real Betis was founded in 1907, two years after its Sevilla rival Sevilla FC was created. The club was known as Betis Balompié during the Spanish Second Republic from 1931 to 1939, following which it reverted back to its original name.
Although it experienced a difficult period from 1940 until 1958, during which time it spent seven seasons in the Tercera División and eight seasons in the Segunda División, this is actually what helped shape the character of the club’s passionate fanbase. Fans continued to pack its home stadium and traveled to attend away matches in what became known as the “Green March.”
In 1954, Real Betis stats became the first Spanish club to win titles in all three divisions.

More about Real Betis
Real Betis hasn’t really come close to winning La Liga since its only title in 1934-35. However, it has won seven Segunda División titles, with the most recent happening in 2014-15.
Outside of La Liga standings, the club won Copa del Rey in 2021-22, 2004-05, and 1976-77. It defeated Valencia in a memorable 2022 Copa del Rey final 5-4 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw through full-time. Borja Iglesias led all players with five goals.
Real Betis also won the Copa Federacion de Espana in 1953-54.

Who are the Real Betis' Best Coaches?
Current manager Manuel Pellegrini has guided Real Betis through its best period in La Liga schedule history, outside of its lone La Liga title in the 1930s. Since being appointed manager in July 2020, Pellegrini has had the best winning percentage in club history.
Pepe Mel led the club to a pair of Segunda División titles in 2011 and 2015, while Lorenzo Serra Ferrer managed the team to a Copa del Rey title in 2005 and earned the club entry in the UEFA Champions League. Patrick O’Connell was the club manager when it won La Liga in 1935.
