Let’s see which team will take the win on this Eagles at Tigers betting preview.
If only one team was unbeaten heading into this matchup between Clemson and Boston College, most college football fans would have assumed Clemson would be the unbeaten team. But the Tigers have lost twice already this season, and their College Football Playoff hopes may have already ended for the year. In this contest against Boston College, Clemson will look to prove that they are still a tough out this year, while BC looks to prove they belong in the ACC title hunt.
Boston College Eagles
Boston College is off to a 4-0 start this season, as they get set to play their first game in ACC conference play against Clemson. The Eagles defeated their first Power 5 opponent of the 2021 season when they beat Missouri last week. In that 41-34 win, the Eagles gained 450 yards of total offense, as they were able to get the job done with a game-winning touchdown in overtime to beat Missouri.
So far this season, the Eagles have done a great job of slowing down the running game of their opponents. They have allowed under 100 rushing yards per game, though they have yet to test themselves against an elite program. If Boston College is going to deal Clemson yet another loss, it is going to take their best effort of the season on both sides of the ball.
Clemson Tigers
Last week, the Clemson Tigers played in an overtime game, just like Boston College did. But unlike the Boston College Eagles, Clemson lost their overtime game to the NC State Wolfpack. That loss was Clemson’s second of the season, with the 27-21 overtime defeat potentially knocking Clemson out of the College Football Playoff conversation entirely before the month of October.
Clemson’s defense has played well throughout this season, but they have had a hard time moving the ball with their offense. Clemson has averaged under 300 yards per game on offense this season, with first-year starter DJ Uiagalelei failing to live up to the levels of performance that Clemson enjoyed with Trevor Lawrence. Now, with the pressure of a potential playoff campaign being off his shoulders, it remains to be seen if Uiagalelei will play better going forward.
Clemson Defense Might Not Be Enough
In most seasons, the Clemson Tigers would be clearly better than Boston College. But the issues surrounding the Clemson offense may be too much for Clemson to overcome as this season wears on. The Tigers are close to an equal ratio of yardage gained to yardage allowed per game, which makes them a prime candidate for an upset every time they take the field.
Clemson is a 14.5-point favorite for this game, and that may be too many points to lay with Dabo Swinney’s team right now. Their lack of offensive consistency will give Boston College an opening to win this game. It should be a low-scoring contest, but Boston College might be worth a look at getting more than two touchdowns against the spread in a game that could see Clemson dip below .500 on the year.
