The quarterback carousel caused a seismic shift in NFL betting odds during the 2022 offseason. Teams are no longer patient about trying to draft and develop their own player. With the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Rams winning consecutive Super Bowls in back-to-back seasons with hired guns at quarterbacks, others are trying to copy the formula.
Because of that, many of the most high-profile moves in the offseason have been rotated around where the signal-callers are going. But NFL expert picks will show you those aren’t the only moves being made. Here’s a look at where people are migrating to.
Reunited in Indy
While Indianapolis acquired Matt Ryan from the Atlanta Falcons to be their quarterback earlier in the offseason, the Colts bolstered the depth chart last week.
Nick Foles, who led the Eagles to the Super Bowl LII crown, was signed to be Ryan’s backup. Colts coach Frank Reich had a history with Foles, as he served as the Eagles’ offensive coordinator the year they won the Super Bowl.
Not clowning around
Cleveland Browns’ defensive end Jadaveon Clowney went on the open market and looked at his options. But after assessing the situation, the 29-year-old former No. 1 overall pick decided he wanted to stay with the Browns and pursue a Super Bowl. NFL betting odds have shown Clowney was a good fit in Cleveland.
Clowney, who was selected to the Pro Bowl three times while he was in Houston, collected nine sacks, 11 tackles for loss, and forced two fumbles for the Browns last season. While that didn’t earn Clowney any accolades, he was able to show Cleveland he can still be a major factor in defense.
It’s a tough business
Being successful as an undrafted free agent isn’t something that happens for every player. Many never even see the field. When Jordan Mosley signed with the New York Giants in mid-May, the Maryland defensive back had hopes of NFL success. However, after an injury at OTAs, his stint with the team is done after less than three weeks.
Mosley was injured at OTAs and then waived by the team. He is now on injury reserved. Mosley was let go with an injury settlement, so he can’t resign with the team for the length of the settlement plus three weeks. Mosley is free to sign with another team pending a physical.
Moseley started 13 games as a senior with the Terrapins and led the team with 83 tackles, including 56 solo stops.
Happy Trails
Long-time Baltimore Ravens punter Sam Koch decided to retire this month. Koch, who played collegiately at Nebraska, played in Baltimore from 2001 to 2021. He was selected to the Pro Bowl and All-Pro team in 2015 and was on one Super Bowl-winning team.
Koch finished with a career average of 45.3 yards per game. NFL betting picks show his single-season career-high in average was 47.4 yards per punt in 2014.
Another camp arm
Brett Hundley has found a long career as a backup since being selected in the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft. Hundley has played with Green Bay, Seattle, Arizona, and Indianapolis and now signed with Baltimore on May 26. The Ravens already have two established quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson, and Tyler Huntley.
Hundley will be trying to catch on as the No. 3 option. He has passed for 1,902 yards, nine touchdowns, and 13 interceptions in his career. In addition, Hundley has rushed for 309 yards and two touchdowns.
Rams shrink the pool
Los Angeles was able to win the Super Bowl on the strength of its defensive line. Despite that, the Rams are always looking for more options.
One of the 17 undrafted rookies Los Angeles signed, North Texas product Dion Novil, was released by the Rams on May 26. Novil was waived after working with the team in OTAs.
During his time with the Mean Green, Rovill finished with 38 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks during a career that spanned 48 games at North Texas.
Trying to catch on
Running back Jeremy McNichols, who signed with the Falcons on May 26, has been doing a lot of bouncing around the league since he was drafted by Tampa Bay in 2017. While McNichols never played a down for the Buccaneers, he has seen regular-season action with four teams, most recently Tennesee.
During the past two seasons with the Titans, McNichols had 88 of his 90 career carries. Last season McNichols got 41 carries and finished with 156 rushing yards.
Six of Mnchiols’ carries resulted in first downs. According to the NFL betting stats, he had his best season as a receiver last year, hauling in a career-high 28 passes for 250 yards and scoring a touchdown.
Eleven of the 28 passes McNichols caught last season ended up going for first downs.
