Super Bowl LVIII was played on Sunday night, and it’s going to go down as one of the best NFL matchups in recent memory. Putting together a Super Bowl recap will start and end with the Kansas City Chiefs, but there were plenty of big moments in the game that wasn’t decided until overtime.
The Kansas City Chiefs were able to come up with a 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers in a game that is going to go down as an instant classic. San Francisco entered the game as a slim 1.5-point betting favorite according to the Super Bowl odds, but ultimately this game ended up with an upset.
When looking back at past Super Bowl reviews, this game is going to go down as one of the most competitive games in league history. Kansas City might have gotten the job done in overtime, but it wasn’t a game without some drama.
49ers Take Early Lead
When putting together this Super Bowl recap it’s going to be tough to not place a ton of blame on the San Francisco 49ers for the loss. San Francisco was favored at -1.5 based on the NFL odds and they were able to jump out to a 10-0 lead in this game.
The Chiefs were able to get a field goal near the end of the first half to get the game closer, but it looked as if San Francisco was controlling this game. Usher was tasked with the Super Bowl Halftime performance, and there is a chance that he might have given the Chiefs some ammo in the second half.
Kansas City was able to get back in the game right away to start the second half, and the competition was on from there. Neither team was able to capitalize by scoring a touchdown in the red zone, but teams continued to score field goals in that area.
When putting together a Super Bowl recap, it’s best to look at the overtime stage of this game as that is when things really started to be decided. Most Super Bowl games are decided after four quarters, but that wasn’t the case in this matchup.
Mahomes, Chiefs Get it Done
There is no way to put together a Super Bowl 2024 recap without talking about the amazing play of Patrick Mahomes in this game. Mahomes didn’t put up historic numbers on Sunday, but he was good enough to win the MVP Award.
At this point of time, it’s hard to make NFL picks against the Kansas City Chiefs as Mahomes just always seems to find a way to get the job done. Mahomes was able to throw a touchdown pass in overtime to push his team past the San Francisco 49ers.
It looked as if the Chiefs were going to struggle to win this game as the offensive line wasn’t able to block for their star quarterback. Mahomes was doing his best to make some plays on offense, but he just couldn’t get the job done.
The Kansas City defense deserves a ton of credit in this game as they were able to keep the San Francisco 49ers out of the end zone to begin overtime. Kansas City also slowed down Christian McCaffrey and that was a massive key.
San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy did his part to lead his offense, but he just wasn’t able to get the 49ers to the end zone. Kansas City struggled to find the end zone as well, but they set the tone on both sides of the ball in this game.
In the end, the Kansas City Chiefs were able to win their second straight Super Bowl and they got the job done in historic fashion in overtime.
