After an extremely disappointing season for the University of Louisville men’s basketball team, the school is planning to make a change in the head coaching position. Officials are expected to inform Kenny Payne that he will be dismissed from his job of running the basketball program at Louisville. This NCAAB news is likely to have implications for Kenny Payne Futures in the basketball coaching market.
Payne was asked about his job after finishing the season with a loss in the ACC Tournament, but he informed reporters that he had not yet met with school officials. Louisville suffered a 94-85 loss to NC State on Tuesday night to finish the NCAAB schedule with a record of 8-24.
The Cardinals initially signed Payne to a six-year deal, and the hope was that he could get the program turned back around. Instead, Payne managed to win just 12 total games in two seasons, and the Cardinals only won one road game during his tenure.
When Payne was hired, he made it clear that it would take at least three or four years to fix the program, and he brought that back up in his post-game press conference. It seemed as if Payne could sense that the writing was on the wall, and he was making a plea to the administration to give him a longer leash.
This college basketball program was used to competing for national championships, but they have become the laughing stock of the ACC over the last few seasons. Once this news is made official, Louisville is still going to be on the hook for $8 million moving forward.
Payne Was a Legend
The decision to hire Payne was widely celebrated by the Louisville community as he has a history with the school. Payne won a national championship at Louisville as a player back in 1986 and was ultimately selected in the first round of the NBA Draft in 1989.
The school was looking to make a big splash when they had their most recent coaching opening, and they chose to hire Payne for several reasons. He was a proven assistant coach at both Kentucky and Oregon, and he promised to bring in some high-level recruits.
Payne was unable to bring in the top high school basketball recruits, including some that have some very clear ties to the Louisville program. D.J. Wagner was the top target for Payne with the 2023 class, but that player chose Kentucky over Louisville.
That situation was made worse by the fact that Payne had hired Milt Wagner to be on staff at Louisville, and he is the grandpa of the prized recruit. Two other top recruits from that class went elsewhere, and fans immediately started to question the coaching hire of Payne.
Payne was unable to land top prospects in the transfer portal either, and Louisville was showing up to most games with a lack of talent. Louisville was able to land a five star prospect in Trentyn Flowers, but he decided to play professionally in Australia rather than play any NCAAB matchup for the Cardinals.
No Success on the Floor
The Louisville program will now be looking for another leader, and there won’t be a ton of interest in this game. Louisville just hasn’t been able to keep up with the top teams in the ACC, and getting top-tier talent is going to get even harder moving forward.
This season got off to a rough start right away as the Cardinals suffered a loss to Division II Kentucky Wesleyan in an exhibition affair. That team was just 3-12 away from home in D II games, and that loss set the stage for a miserable season.
Louisville won the first road game under Payne back on January 10th as they picked up a win against Miami. The Cardinals were hoping that would be a sign of things to come, but they beat a Miami team that finished the season playing some horrible basketball. This win under Payne’s leadership may have initially boosted hopes for Kenny Payne Futures within the Louisville program.
It’s unclear if the rest of the coaching staff will be out of a job as well, but that decision will have to be made by the administration. The uncertain future of the program could affect NCAAB odds for upcoming NCAAB games involving Louisville.
