Xander Schauffele Wins PGA Championship
Xander Schauffele is an Olympic gold medalist, and he has been one of the best golfers on the PGA Tour over the last few years. Despite his accolades, Schauffele hadn’t yet captured that elusive first major title.
Schauffele can now check off that box as he won the 2024 PGA Championship at the Valhalla Golf Course this past weekend. It was a terrific battle throughout the entire weekend, but the 30-year-old was able to outlast some other golf superstars in order to win the tournament.
The knock on Schauffele has always been that he can’t finish off a tournament, but he proved the doubters wrong with a 6-under 65 to capture the tournament at 21 under par. Not only did he win the event, he set a PGA Tour record for the lowest 72-hole scoring total in one of the four major tournaments.
Schauffele walked to the 18th tee on Sunday in a tie with Bryson DeChambeau and then hit a wayward tee shot to put himself in a tough position. There was still time for Schauffele to recover since this was a par five, and he put his third shot chip within six feet of the hole.

From +1400 Underdog to Champion
Laying up and going for the tie was an option that was available for Schauffele, but he aggressively attacked the cup and saw his putt lip in for a clinching birdie. Seeking to avoid a playoff clash with DeChambeau, Schauffele expressed his desire to end the match during regulation.
While American dominance continued with a ninth consecutive PGA Championship victory, international players also made their presence felt near the top of the leaderboard. Schauffele is the number three player in the world, and he has now won nine times on the PGA Tour.
Schauffele entered the odds to win PGA Championship at +1400 to capture the title and he is consistently in the mix. That was the case again this weekend, but those who backed him were finally able to cash in over the weekend.
Terrific Leaderboard
Xander Schauffele walked away with the massive purse of $3.3 million by winning the tournament this weekend, and he had to get it done against some other great golfers. Bryson DeChambeau finished with a seven-under 64 on Sunday and that allowed him to move into second place for the PGA Championship.
Viktor Hovland was also in the running at the PGA Championship as he shot -18 for the tournament, and there was a big gap after the top three golfers. Despite flying under the radar during the final round, Thomas Detry snuck into a tie for fourth place alongside Collin Morikawa at -15.
Major golf tournaments always tend to have some terrific leaderboards, but this golf event will go down as one of the best in recent memory.

Rough Weekend For Scheffler
Scottie Scheffler is the number one player in the world and he entered the PGA Championship as a big betting favorite to walk away with another win. Scheffler looked like he was well on his way to being in contention before he was arrested before the start of play on Friday, instead, was Xander Schauffele who won the PGA Championship.
The start of the second round of the PGA Championship was delayed due to a fan being struck by a bus as he tried to enter Valhalla Golf Course. Scheffler was trying to navigate his way into the course when he reportedly dragged a police officer with his car.
Freshly released from jail, he made it in time to compete in the PGA Championship’s second round. However, things started to fall apart on Saturday. Scheffler still finished with a 6-under 65 in the final round on Sunday, but he was never in a position to make a run.
His third round score of a 2-over 73 was his worst round of golf in 266 days, and that kept him well out of position to win the tournament. He still finished in eighth place at the PGA Championship, which was his 10th finish in the top-10 in his last 13 starts at a major.
