NL 2023 Cy Young Award Analysis
Zac Gallen, Arizona Diamondbacks +175
Gallen is one of several tied at the top of the National League in wins, with eight. The 27-year-old is allowing just 2.96 runs per game and has struck out 100 batters, which is tied for third in the National League.
The Diamondbacks have been one of the biggest surprises in all of Major League Baseball, so if he gets his team to the postseason, he will be tough to surpass as the winner of this award. MLB odds put him as the favorite to win the award at +175.
Clayton Kershaw, Los Angeles Dodgers +550
The ageless wonder continues to throw the ball well. Kershaw turned 35 in March and is throwing at an elite level. Kershaw is 8-4 on the season, with a 2.95 earned run average.
The lefthander has struck out 98 batters this season in just over 82 innings. Playing in Los Angeles is going to give him plenty of attention, and this team should make the postseason.
Can he stay healthy is the biggest question for the former award winner. When making MLB picks, Kershaw is one to pay attention to at +550 to win the NL Cy Young.
Spencer Strider, Atlanta Braves +700
The National League leader in strikeouts, and it’s really not close. Coming into Monday, Strider struck out 127 batters, and second place was at 108.
Strider has fought through some consistency issues, and his ERA is higher than a Cy Young winner usually is. If he can lower that by a run or so by the end of the season, he will have a chance. Strider is projected to finish the season just shy of 300 strikeouts.
Lastly, the Braves are at the top of the MLB standings from the National League side, so being on a winning team can’t hurt.
Zack Wheeler, Philadelphia Phillies +700
Zack Wheeler is a guy that continues to quietly go about his business as one of the best pitchers in the game. Wheeler has six wins on the season but has a 3.48 earned run average and has struck out 98 batters this season.
Looking at the recent MLB games, the Phillies have started to get hot, as they are on a six-game winning streak. This is much of what they did a season ago and were the National League Champions.
Mitch Keller, Pittsburgh Pirates +900
One of the surprises so far this season is the 27-year-old from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Trailing only Strider in strikeouts, Keller is the ace on a Pirates team that is surprisingly in the hunt.
Looking at the MLB stats, Keller sits with an 8-3 record and a 3.62 earned run average. His last start at Milwaukee was not great, as he took a 5-0 loss to the Brewers. But before that, he was strong with 24 innings, striking out 24 batters.
Others to Consider
With all the main candidates out of the way, let’s take a quick look if some of the outsiders are worth a bet in the 2023 NL Cy Young Award Winner futures market.
Marcus Stroman, Chicago Cubs +1200
Stroman leads the National League with 13 quality starts. He played for a Cubs team that has played well as of late, but likely on the outside looking in, even in the National League Central.
The 32-year-old is looking to use this season to gain a big, final long-term contract, whether it’s back in Chicago or one of the other MLB teams.
Logan Webb, San Francisco Giants +1400
Webb anchors a Giants staff that has been pretty up and down this season. Webb has 11 quality starts, which is second only to Stroman.
Corbin Burnes, Milwaukee Brewers +2200
Lastly, for the last of the 2023 NL Cy Young Award Winner futures, we have Corbin Burnes.
Burnes knows a thing or two about winning this award. Corbin got off to a slow start but has picked it up as of late. Burnes has thrown over 83 innings and struck out 83 batters. Over his last four starts, the right-hander has struck out 32 batters. This is one to watch throughout the summer.
This should be a fun race to watch through the dog days of summer and beyond. Enjoy the rest of the Major League Baseball season and watch these top pitchers take the mound and give their team a chance to win.
