North Carolina Preview:
The Tar Heels currently hold a 2-1 mark on the season. After dropping the season opener to the Virginia Tech Hokies this team has found a nice groove putting up consecutive wins over Georgia State 59-17 and the Virginia Cavaliers 59-39.
In the win over the Cavaliers, Ty Chandler was terrific on the ground. Chandler finished the game with 20 carries totaling 198 yards on the day. Prior to the start of the season, this team was touted for their quarterback play and Sam Howell has picked it as of late tossing 5 touchdown passes on 14/21 with 307 yards on the day. Howell did have one interception in the game.
Finding the end zone has not been much of an issue for the Tar Heels this season as they are averaging 43 points per game. This team ranks 13th in the nation for rushing yards at 246.0 and has totaled 1,660 yards of total offense.
While this offense is able to put up points in a hurry, the defense has been slow to get things going. The Heels are allowing 812 yards through the air per game for 120th in the nation. Luckily this team has put up 59 points over the last two games despite the defense giving up 24.3 per game. The Tar Heels are 12.5 point favorites in this game and it’s for good reason since the Yellow Jacket defense struggles at containing the opposition.
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets Preview:
The Yellow Jackets have been slow out of the gates this season as they currently sit at a 1-2 record. They suffered a crushing opening defeat to Northern Illinois 22-21 before earning their first win of the year against Kennesaw State. Last week they played against the Clemson Tigers and gave the Tigers all they could handle but again fell short 14-8 on the road.
Jordan Yates was 20/33 with 203 yards in the loss to the Tigers. He was pretty strong in not turning the ball over and he carried 16 times for 32 yards. Defensively this team did all they could containing the Tigers explosive offense only giving up 126 yards through the air and 158 yards on the ground.
While this team has played some quality opponents in the early going and have kept games close, for the season they are only scoring 24.7 points per game. Penalties have really haunted this ball club as through three games they have 17 total on 99 yards which has really benefited the opposition.
Defense is where the Yellow Jackets have really struggled as they have allowed 484 yards on the ground and 124 yards through the air. This could really play into the Tar Heels advantage as this team can put points on the board in a hurry.
These two teams have met a total of 54 times between the two programs. The Yellow Jackets hold the advantage 30-21-3. Due to the Covid shortened season, last season these two teams did not meet but the Tar Heels are currently on a one-game winning streak after earning a win in 2019.
The Tar Heels feature the more talented team and have one of the premier quarterbacks in the country. Heels should walk away with another win and put up big points for the third consecutive week.
