A WTA/ATP Challenger event held for the first time this year, the Golden Gate Open at the University of Stanford is a hard-court tournament. Being played in conjunction with the Western & Southern Open, an ATP/WTA 1000 event.
Most of the best male and female players are in Cincinnati for that tournament, one of the last tennis main events before the US Open. But there are a few noteworthy players at Stanford.
There’s a total of $160,000 on the line during the inaugural Golden Gate Open predictions. There are 32 participants in the male and female draw, meaning no automatic byes for any of the top seeds. The women’s draw has already been upended with two of the top five seeds eliminated in the first round.
Let’s take a closer look at early results and Golden Gate Open predictions.
Men’s Draw Early Results
Arthur Rinderknech, the world No. 61, was the top seed in the men’s draw but was a late withdrawal. That leaves Yosuke Watanuki, Michael Mmoh, Constant Lestienne, and Borna Gojo as the top four seeds. All of whom have played sparingly in official ATP events this season.
While Watanuki and Mmoh had yet to play as of early Monday evening. Both Gojo and Lestienne had already advanced through to the second round.
Andrian Andreev, Alex Michelsen, and Aleksandar Kovacevic were also through to the second round. Gojo, who along with Mmoh has the most name recognition in the men’s game, plays Michelsen in the second round and, if successful, would play the winner of Lestienne and qualifier Alexander Cozbinov.
Women’s Draw Early Results
German Tamara Korpatsch has the best tennis odds to win the women’s draw as the top seed. A former world No. 74, Korpatsch plays Maryna Zanevska in the first round on Tuesday.
The winner of that match takes on the winner of Daria Sniugr and qualifier Yafan Wang. Third-seed American Claire Lu, one of the popular tennis picks, is already out of the competition after losing in three sets to Zhuoxuan Bai. Fifth seed Diana Shnaider also lost her first-round match to Jodie Burrage.
The second round in the bottom half of the bracket is already set. With key matches including second seed Kamilla Rakhimova vs. Robin Montgomery and eighth seed Danka Kovinic vs. qualifier Iryna Shymanovich.
Must-Bet Matches
Zachary Svajda (-138) vs. Adam Walton (+100)
American Zachary Svajda is a favorite in first-round action in the Golden Gate Open predictions as he takes on Australian Adam Walton, who received a special exemption. Walton is ranked slightly higher in the world rankings, but Svajda has a 1-0 career advantage, beating Walton in a Challenger event in 2022.
Given it’s an even money bet, Walton isn’t a bad option to win the match. He’s 45-21 this season and has won each of his last five matches, whereas Svajda has lost two in a row and possibly struggled with his confidence.
Carol Zhao (+333) vs. Kayla Day (-500)
When betting on Challenger events with lesser-known players, there’s always opportunity when taking the underdog and that certainly applies here. There’s not much that separates players at this level, so there’s no reason why Carol Zhao, who has had some success on the WTA Tour, can’t be Kayla Day – in fact, Zhao already has a win over Day.
Day is 2-1 in her career against Zhao and has two titles this year whereas Zhao has yet to win a title this season and is just 16-22. Zhao has played slightly better competition than Day, however, and offers great betting value at +333.
ATP Golden Gate Open Prediction
Given he is already through to the second round and looked good doing so, Gojo is a great pick to win the inaugural men’s draw at the Golden Gate Open.
He has three wins over top-100 opponents this season and has played well against others.
WTA Golden Gate Open Prediction
The women’s draw is wide open, but seventh seed Rebecca Peterson is a solid outright pick to march through to the finals. She is taking on Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama in the second round and has the pedigree to beat any player in this event as a former world No. 43.
She’s 18-12 this season, including three main draw wins at the BNP Paribas Open in March.
