Preakness Stakes
One of the standout 2024 May horse races comes in the form of the Preakness Stakes. This Grade One is the middle leg of the Triple Crown, and it will be run over 1 ¼ miles at Pimlico on Saturday. A small field will likely go to post for the race, but it will include recently crowned Kentucky Derby champion Mystik Dan.
The three-year-old defied lofty odds to land the Derby at Churchill Downs, holding off late challenges from Sierra Leone and Forever Young. However, Derby winners haven’t fared well in the Preakness in recent years, with Mage looking very tired in last year’s edition.
Therefore, Muth could be among the standout horse racing predictions. The three-year-old for Bob Baffert was ineligible for the Derby, but he remains among the most talented three-year-olds in the U.S. Muth also holds solid form over Mystik Dan after finishing six lengths ahead of his re-appearing rival in the G1 Arkansas Derby. Catching Freedom could bounce back from his poor run in the Derby by taking second.

Black-Eyed Susan Stakes
Before the second leg of the Triple Crown, one of the top horse racing events on Friday will be the G2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes. This race is the second leg of the Triple Tiara, with the field of fillies competing over 1 1/8 miles on the dirt. A competitive field of eight runners will go to post for one of the top 2024 May horse races.
The 100th edition of the race looks to be a wide-open affair, with a number of previous graded winners among the leading contenders. Corposo is among the interesting contenders for trainer Peter Eurton after previously finishing third in the G2 Santa Anita Oaks. She was in fine form before that effort after locking a 104 speed rating when winning a maiden special weight.
Call Another Play demands respect from the Michael Trombetta yard after winning on each of her previous three starts. However, Lemon Muffin gets the nod. The D. Wayne Lukas runner was eighth in the G1 Kentucky Oaks on her previous start, but she was a winner earlier in the season when landing the G1 Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn Park.
Pimlico Special
The G3 Pimlico Special, another standout horse racing event this weekend, will run on Friday. The horse racing lines this week will be very interesting for this race, which has been won by a number of Horse of the Year winners, including Invasor, Seabiscuit, and Whirlaway.
This weekend, a field of eight will compete, including several progressive contenders. Red Route One deserves plenty of respect for trainer Steven Asmussen, having landed the G2 New Orleans Classic already this term. He last appeared finishing third in the G2 Oaklawn HCP at the end of April.
Harlocap also represents the same yard, and could be an interesting Exotic angle after winning once from four starts this year. But, the preference is for the ultra-consistent Kingsbarns for Todd Pletcher. The four-year-old has won on both starts this year, including most recently in the G3 Ben Ali Stakes. His only no-show came when 14th in the G1 Kentucky Derby last year. A big season looks ahead for this runner for Pletcher.
