Preakness Stakes Odds
The 2024 Preakness Stakes odds are live, with Muth heading the market at this stage at -150. Derby victor Mystik Dan is currently at +275, with Triple Crown rival, Catching Freedom, available at +650. Imagination is also a leading contender at +475, while Tuscan Gold could represent value at +450 for trainer Chad Brown.
Preakness Stakes Leading Contenders
Muth -150
Bob Baffert take a victory in the race 12 months ago with National Treasure, and a similar path has been trodden by Muth this term. He is one of the most talented three-year-old runners in the U.S., but he wasn’t able to run in the Derby due to Baffert’s ban at Churchill Downs. However, the form in the book certainly makes him the contender to beat after winning four from six career starts.
He has been excellent throughout 2024, landing the G2 San Vincent Stakes and G1 Arkansas Derby this term. The latest of those secured a mighty speed figure, finishing clear of Just Steel and Mystik Dan at Oaklawn Park. That form line very much makes him the one to beat at Pimlico this weekend.
Mystik Dan +275
One of the biggest pieces of horse racing news was revealed over the weekend, as Kenneth McPeek revealed that Mystik Dan would be taking his chance in the second leg of the Triple Crown. The three-year-old was a shock winner of the G1 Kentucky Derby in early May, with Brian Hernandez giving his mount the best possible ride down the rail before finishing a nose clear of Sierra Leone.
The win was as much to do with the ride as the actual ability of the horse, but he has been excellent throughout his career to this point. But, the 2024 Preakness Stakes odds are unlikely to favor his chances against Muth after finishing over six lengths behind the Baffert runner in the G1 Arkansas Derby in March.
Tuscan Gold +450
Tuscan Gold could be among the interesting newcomers to the Triple Crown series this weekend, with Chad Brown looking to go one better in the Preakness than his second in the Derby. This three-year-old has a very likable profile. He broke his maiden on his first start this year in a maiden special weight at Gulfstream Park.
He stepped into the graded company following that effort, but he finished third in the G2 Louisiana Derby. That form reads relatively strong, and he is likely to out-run his odds with fitness on his side on Saturday.
Preakness Stakes Prediction
Muth appears to be an incredibly progressive contender from the Baffert yard, and he is a sound choice at the top of the horse racing betting odds. The three-year-old already has the measure of Mystik Dan, with his leading contenders Imagination and Catching Freedom. The slight preference is for the latter to bounce back from his disappointing run in the Derby to take second.
